AdBlue Contamination

All over Kent we have identified an increasing number of instances of AdBlue contamination where a motorist has put AdBlue directly into their diesel fuel tank. This is in part stemming from people not knowing the way to work with it (pay attention: it's actually not a fuel additive), and partly simply because the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are normally right near to each other on the vehicle.

So, what's the matter with putting AdBlue in your diesel tank? Seeing that AdBlue is predominantly deionised water, it's like pouring water in your tank. Diesel and water really do not blend at all and trying to run a diesel car on water isn't going to work. Apart from this, the urea is highly corrosive to your fuel system lines and seals and is susceptible to crystallisation, blocking injectors and filters.

If you find you have put AdBlue in a fuel tank drain it at the earliest opportunity. And certainly be careful not to start the vehicle - not even to shift it off the pump. If perhaps you have started the car you may almost certainly need to have the full fuel system cleaned and fuel filters changed.

Water contaminated fuel

Fuel contaminated with water, whether it's unleaded petrol or diesel, is undoubtedly a serious condition to address in a car - particularly in advanced common-rail engines. Having water inside your diesel or petrol may well produce idling issues, irregular running, abnormal smoke and, if it's not dealt with properly, potentially broken injectors. Having water in petrol is a lot easier to clean out when compared with water in diesel - largely because diesel is an oil.
